Confirm the Missouri rule
Missouri treats standard license plates as belonging to the registered owner, not as part of the donated vehicle. Before you rely on that, confirm the current instruction with the Missouri DMV/DOR, especially if the vehicle has specialty, personalized, disabled, dealer, or temporary plates. General internet advice can be wrong because a minority of states leave plates on the vehicle.
Remove plates before tow
Remove the front and rear plates before the tow truck takes the vehicle. Put them somewhere safe with your title copy, donation receipt, and any DMV notes. Transfer or surrender them
If you plan to buy or register another vehicle, ask the Missouri DMV/DOR how to transfer the plates and what documents to bring. Do not put the plates on another vehicle until the transfer is accepted. If you are not transferring them, follow the DMV/DOR instruction for surrendering the plates or otherwise closing out the registration record.
Keep the plate receipt
Keep the receipt or written confirmation from any plate surrender, transfer, or registration cancellation transaction. This is your proof that the plates were handled after donation. It may also be needed by your insurance company before they cancel coverage without a penalty. Save a paper copy and a photo with your donation records for later questions or audits.
File the transfer notice
After the vehicle is gone and the plate step is handled, file the notice of transfer or release of liability.
